Planning a week in Hopkins, Belize? You’ve picked a great place to experience several completely different sides of Belize without having to change hotels every couple of days.
Hopkins is a small coastal village in southern Belize known for its Garifuna culture, laid-back atmosphere, beautiful coastline, and easy access to both the Belize Barrier Reef and mainland adventures.
Spend one day snorkeling over colorful coral reefs and the next hiking through the rainforest to a waterfall. Explore ancient Maya cities, go cave tubing, learn about Garifuna culture, fish for your lunch, or simply grab a drink and spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing.
And yes, we actually recommend doing nothing for at least part of your vacation! Seven days gives you enough time to experience some of the best things to do in and around Hopkins without turning your vacation into a race.
Here’s how we would spend a perfect week.
Day 1: Arrive in Hopkins & Slow Down
Welcome to Hopkins!
Whether you’re arriving from the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, Placencia, San Ignacio, or elsewhere in Belize, resist the temptation to immediately fill your first afternoon with activities.
Check into your hotel, change into something comfortable, and explore the village.

Walk along the beach, grab a cold drink, try some local food, and get your first taste of the relaxed Hopkins lifestyle.
Hopkins is a village where slowing down is part of the experience.
If you have time, take a walk or golf cart ride through the village. Stop at a local restaurant, chat with people, and get familiar with your surroundings.
Do you need a rental car in Hopkins?
Not necessarily.
Hopkins itself is easy to explore by bicycle or golf cart, and many tour operators provide transportation for organized excursions.
If you plan to explore Belize independently, a rental vehicle can be useful. But if most of your week consists of organized tours, you may find that you don’t need one at all.
Local tip: Don’t schedule your biggest adventure on arrival day. Flights get delayed, luggage takes time, and travel days can be tiring. Give yourself an afternoon to settle in.
Day 2: Snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef
Now the adventure begins.
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Hopkins is having access to the incredible Belize Barrier Reef.

From Hopkins, boats head offshore toward the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, where you’ll find coral reefs, tropical fish, rays, and other marine life.
Depending on conditions and the snorkeling location, every trip can be a little different. That’s part of the fun.
Half-Day or Full-Day Snorkeling?
This is one of the questions we hear most often.
If snorkeling is just one of several things you want to experience, a half-day snorkeling trip is a great choice. You’ll typically have two snorkeling stops and still have your afternoon free.
If you love being on the water, choose the full-day experience.
A full day gives you more time on the reef, additional snorkeling opportunities, and the chance to slow down and enjoy island time rather than rushing back to shore.
Our Full Day Barrier Reef Snorkeling experience includes three snorkeling stops and a BBQ-style picnic lunch at Bread & Butter Caye.
There’s something pretty special about spending your morning underwater and then sitting on a tiny Caribbean island enjoying lunch with your feet in the sand.
Can beginners snorkel in Belize?
Absolutely.
You don’t need to be an experienced snorkeler to enjoy the reef. Let your guide know if you’re new or aren’t completely comfortable in the water.
A good guide will help you with your equipment, explain what to expect, and make sure you’re comfortable before heading out.
What should you bring?
Keep it simple:
- Reef-friendly sunscreen
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Towel
- Swimsuit
- Waterproof camera if you have one
- Light cover-up or shirt for sun protection
And don’t forget to look up occasionally. The boat ride itself is part of the experience.
Day 3: Ancient Maya History + Cave Adventure
Today you’re trading turquoise Caribbean water for jungle, caves, and ancient Maya history.
Head inland to Xunantunich, one of Belize’s most impressive Maya archaeological sites.

Getting there is part of the adventure. Visitors cross the Mopan River aboard a hand-cranked ferry before continuing to the archaeological site.
Once inside, you’ll walk through ancient plazas and temples while your guide explains the history of the city and the people who once lived there.
The highlight for many visitors is El Castillo.
Those comfortable making the climb are rewarded with incredible views over the surrounding jungle and toward Guatemala.
Can you visit Xunantunich from Hopkins?
Yes.
It’s a longer day, but it’s very doable as a day trip from Hopkins.
And because you’re already heading inland, we often recommend combining Xunantunich with another adventure.
One of our favorite combinations is Xunantunich & Cave Tubing.
After exploring the Maya ruins and stopping for lunch, you trade temples for tubes and float through Belize’s fascinating cave systems.
It’s a full day, but you get two completely different Belize experiences in one trip.
What should you wear?
Comfortable walking shoes are important for the ruins.
If you’re combining the trip with cave tubing, bring:
- Water shoes
- Swimsuit
- Towel
- Change of clothes
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen
You’ll probably be tired when you get back to Hopkins.
That’s okay. Tomorrow is deliberately slower.
Day 4: Experience Hopkins & Garifuna Culture
Not every vacation day needs a 7:00 AM departure.
After two adventure-filled days, spend some time enjoying Hopkins itself.

Hopkins is widely known as one of the best places in Belize to experience Garifuna culture.
Food is a great place to start.
Try traditional dishes, fresh seafood, hudut if you find it on the menu, and other local favorites. Depending on what’s happening during your visit, you may also have opportunities to experience drumming, dancing, cooking, or other cultural activities.
Take your time exploring the village.
Rent a bicycle or golf cart, stop for lunch somewhere local, walk the beach, browse small shops, and talk to people.
This is also a great day for a massage or simply spending a few hours by the pool.
Should you schedule a tour every day in Belize?
We don’t recommend it.
It can be tempting to squeeze everything possible into seven days, but Belize is much more enjoyable when you leave some breathing room in your itinerary.
A slower day also gives you flexibility if weather causes one of your marine activities to move to another day.
Day 5: Rainforest, Waterfalls & Wildlife
Time to head into the rainforest.

Hopkins is conveniently located near some fantastic hiking and nature experiences, including Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Mayflower Bocawina National Park.
Which one should you choose?
It depends on the experience you’re looking for.
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
Cockscomb is famous for its protected rainforest and wildlife.
Don’t expect a jaguar to casually walk across the trail for your vacation photo. Jaguars live here, but sightings are rare.
Instead, enjoy Cockscomb for what makes it special: lush rainforest, birds, wildlife signs, beautiful trails, and waterfalls.
A guided hike gives you a much better chance of noticing the things you’d probably walk straight past on your own.
Mayflower Bocawina National Park
If waterfalls are high on your Belize wish list, Bocawina is another excellent option.
There are different hiking experiences depending on your fitness level and how adventurous you’re feeling.
For a more moderate adventure, hike to Bocawina Falls.
For travelers looking for something more challenging, Antelope Falls offers a steeper hike with beautiful views, ropes along sections of the trail, and refreshing pools.
Whichever you choose, bring insect repellent.
You’ll thank us later.
Day 6: Go Fishing, Island Hopping & Have Lunch on a Caye
By Day 6, you may be tempted to go back to the reef.

We don’t blame you.
But instead of repeating your snorkeling day, experience the Caribbean differently.
One of our favorite ways to spend a full day from Hopkins is combining fishing, island time, food, and snorkeling.
Catch Your Lunch
Our private Cook Your Catch experience starts with a morning of reef fishing.
Then comes the best part.
You’ll head to Bread & Butter Caye, where your guide prepares a BBQ-style island lunch featuring the day’s catch along with side dishes.

After lunch, relax on the island, enjoy the water, and head out for some snorkeling before returning to Hopkins.
It’s less about checking things off a sightseeing list and more about having a genuinely fun day in Belize.
Prefer Not to Fish?
Choose a Private Island Hopping & Beach BBQ instead.
Spend the day exploring several cayes along the southern Belize Barrier Reef. Depending on the day’s conditions and your guide’s recommendations, stops may include islands such as South Water Caye, Tobacco Caye, Bread & Butter Caye, or others in the area.

Swim.
Snorkel.
Have a drink.
Eat lunch.
Sit under a palm tree.
Repeat as necessary.
This is vacation, after all.
Day 7: Take It Easy & Finish With a Sunset
Your last day shouldn’t feel like you’re racing against the clock.
Sleep in.
Have a leisurely breakfast.
Go for one last swim.
Pick up souvenirs.
Take photos around Hopkins.
Have lunch somewhere you haven’t tried yet.
Then, if your travel schedule allows, finish your week on the water.
Private Sunset Cruise
In the late afternoon, head out for a private cruise along the peaceful Sittee River and Anderson Lagoon.

As the sun begins to drop behind the Maya Mountains, settle in with a drink and watch the colors change across the sky.
Keep an eye along the riverbanks too. Birds, crocodiles, and other wildlife are often part of the experience.
Our private sunset cruise includes drinks and appetizers and is especially popular with couples celebrating anniversaries, honeymoons, birthdays, or simply enjoying a romantic Belize getaway.
But you don’t need a special occasion.
Sometimes being in Belize is reason enough to celebrate.
Is Seven Days Enough for Hopkins, Belize?
Yes.
Seven days is a great amount of time if you want a combination of adventure and relaxation.
You’ll have enough time to experience the reef, rainforest, Maya history, local culture, and village life without having to change hotels constantly.
If you have 10 days or two weeks, even better. Add more free days and consider exploring other parts of Belize.
But if you only have one week, Hopkins makes an excellent base.
Should You Stay in Hopkins for Your Entire Belize Vacation?
That depends on what you want to see.
If your priorities include the Belize Barrier Reef, rainforest, waterfalls, wildlife, Maya sites, Garifuna culture, and a relaxed beach atmosphere, you can experience an impressive amount of Belize while using Hopkins as your home base.
For travelers who want to explore farther north or spend several days in western Belize, splitting the trip between destinations can make sense.
But don’t assume you have to move hotels every few days to see Belize.
You don’t.
What Happens if the Weather Changes?
This is Belize, and we’re in the tropics.
A weather app showing rain does not necessarily mean you’re going to lose an entire vacation day.
Tropical weather can change quickly, and brief showers are common.
Marine tours are more dependent on sea conditions, particularly wind and waves. A responsible captain will make decisions based on actual conditions and safety rather than simply looking at a rain icon on a weather app.
Rainforest and inland adventures can often operate in light rain, although conditions on trails, rivers, and caves always need to be considered.
This is another reason we recommend leaving a little flexibility in your itinerary.
Do You Need to Book Hopkins Tours in Advance?
For popular travel periods, yes.
Private boats, guides, vehicles, and certain experiences have limited availability.
Booking ahead is particularly helpful if you’re visiting around Christmas, New Year’s, Easter, spring break, or other busy travel periods.
If your dates are flexible, let your tour operator know. Sometimes moving an activity by a day can make your itinerary work much better.
Is Hopkins Good for Families?
Definitely.
The trick is choosing activities appropriate for your children’s ages, swimming ability, energy level, and interests.
Snorkeling, wildlife experiences, Maya ruins, easy waterfall adventures, chocolate making, fishing, and island days can all be fantastic family activities.
Don’t feel like you have to choose the most adventurous version of every experience.
Sometimes the kids’ favorite day ends up being the one involving a boat, a beach, and absolutely no schedule.
How Many Tours Should You Book for a 7-Day Hopkins Vacation?
For most travelers, we’d recommend around four major adventure days during a seven-day stay.
That gives you enough time to experience the reef, mainland, culture, and wildlife while still having room to relax.
A vacation shouldn’t require another vacation to recover from it.
Use this itinerary as a starting point rather than a strict schedule.
Swap days around. Sleep late one morning. Add another snorkeling day if you fall in love with the reef. Skip something if you’d rather stay on the beach.
That’s the beauty of Hopkins.
